TNSAVE Instructs TN Air National Guard on Building Evaluations
On June 15, 2016, TNSAVE delivered training on structural assessment and visual evaluation of structures damaged by earthquakes and wind/flood. The class was hosted by the Air National Guard at their facility located at the Memphis Airport. A total of 36 personnel attended the training including members of the Air National Guard, Memphis Office of Emergency Management, Memphis Airport, FEDEX and TEMA. The training was delivered by TNSAVE volunteers Clint Camp, PE and Rick Heckel, PE, D.GE. The event began with an overview of the TNSAVE program. Clint then presented modules on structural basics, structural response to earthquakes and structural response to wind. Rick then presented the rapid visual assessment procedures which are modeled after ATC 20 (earthquakes) and ATC 45 (wind/flood). He finished with modules on damage evaluations for earthquakes and then wind/flood. This class represents the first time TNSAVE members have delivered this training. |
TNSAVE Hosts First-Ever Training Class
Thirty-nine volunteers attended TNSAVEs first-ever training course on ATC 20/45 Procedures for Post-Disaster Safety Evaluation of Buildings. The training took place on April 22, 2016, at TEMA Headquarters in Nashville. Ted Pruess, PE, a structural engineer and member of Missouri’s SAVE program was our instructor. This training or an approved equivalent must be taken every 3 years for individuals wishing to be deployed to perform structural inspections following a disaster. Seven professional development hours were awarded to the licensed architects and engineers who were in attendance. |

TNSAVE Participates in the Indiana I-BEAM Building Inspector Exercise
On September 22-25, TNSAVE Representatives Brenna Robinson (TEMA) and J. Michael Barry (SAME) observed and participated in an exercise of the Indiana I-BEAM Building Inspector Program in New Harmony, Indiana. I-BEAM is a function of the Indiana State Fire Marshal and the Indiana Dept. of Homeland Security. During the exercise, I-BEAM tested the mobilization of its building inspectors, command center setup, and field deployment for building inspections. The scenario was based upon an earthquake along the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in southwestern Indiana. Along with TNSAVE and representatives from the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC), members from the Missouri S.A.V.E. Coalition and the Illinois FAST building inspection programs participated in and observed exercise activities. TNSAVE learned valuable lessons during the exercise and will continue working with CUSEC and other States to develop our own building inspector program. We would like to thank Indiana and the I-BEAM team for hosting us at their exercise and look forward to future collaboration with them. |
